In his 1961 lecture on visionary experience Huxley posits the reason for our ‘immensely high valuation of precious stones’ to be connected to subconscious representations of the divine. He cites various descriptions of Paradise and the afterlife in support of this – observing that jewels are a constituent part of paradise in many cultures in which such stones are to be found, whereas in less jewel-rich localities such as Teutonic and Celtic regions, paradise is instead adorned with glass; the Teutons spoke of Glasberg, or the Mountain of Glass, where ancient dwellers around what is now known as Glastonbury Tor, named it the Isle of Glass. Where Gerald of Wales has the translation of this as Ynys Gutrin, it has also variously been dubbed Ynys Witrin, or as appears in Huxley’s The Doors of Perception/Heaven and Hell Ynisvitrin. Perhaps the most renowned name given to the Celtic paradise is the Isle of Avalon, thought to be the home of evil sorceress Morgana Le Fay in Arthurian legend. Whilst the Tor was originally surrounded by water it was subject to a strange optical mirage known as Fata Morgana, which gave the illusion of a fairy castle materialising from thin air. This song follows an ancient inhabitant of the area as they row out toward the Tor…
